To market to market

For the past few weeks, I have been working for Green City Market, the farmer’s market in Lincoln Park in Chicago. I am the “social media intern”, though I don’t know if that’s actually a title. Anyway, I update their twitter and facebook pages, among other things. My favorite part about the whole job is making friends with the farmers and vendors. I have already learned a ton about different foods and ways to prepare them.

I discovered my love for radishes (with salt and butter), though jury’s still out on whether I’m going to muster up enough courage to buy and prepare mushrooms. The guy who sells them told me he used to be a mushroom-hater (like me) until he tried the ones from the farm he works for, now he loves them. One of these days I’ll give it a shot. Just not yet.

Maple Cake with Maple Syrup Frosting

Sometimes, bad days happen. Sometimes, while walking back to my car after the farmer’s market I find it’s been smashed in by a cab taking a left. That’s always fun.

But sometimes, sometimes a recipe has the power to erase all previous baking failures and bad days. Sometimes, I decide to finally make that recipe I’ve had tagged in a magazine for months. And that recipe turns out to be the most delicious, unexpectedly fabulous maple cake with cream cheese maple syrup frosting.

Scafuri Bakery: Before

Remember how I started a blog about starting a bakery?  Oh yeah. That’s what this was about…but instead I’ve been filling these pages with pictures of pretty leaves, and sure, those are fun to look at. But lately it seems like I don’t do anything but take trips and bake things, when really I’ve just been waiting to start this bakery.  A couple days ago I went with my aunt to the building, where they are beginning renovations this week.  Excited to see it? I sure was.

Drumroll please…

Ta Da!!

Not quite the beauty you expected eh?  Well, it was beautiful to me.  Sure, it’s sort of dirty, and the walls, ceilings, and floors need to be replaced, and none of the equipment works at the moment, but it has the most amazing potential.

The Great Outdoors

I spent a couple days in Northern Wisconsin with my wonderful friend Kaitlin.  This area, called the Northwoods, has over 1,000 lakes!  Every time we drove past one over the course of our trip, we’d yell “Lake!”, though, that may have just been me.

Last weekend I went to Ann Arbor, Michigan to visit my friend Alex.  We spent most of the weekend cooking and eating, but managed some fun adventures in between as well.
